Description

All that detail can be daunting! But we love it!
It comes down to simplifying shapes. In this workshop you will learn how to choose and crop your photo reference as well as how to decide what to leave in and what to leave out. Using a gridding method, you will see how to use large shapes to lay out your drawing and then create an underpainting. By working into the large shapes with hard and soft pastels and pastel pencils you can create the illusion of detail without overdoing it. No matter what level you are at you will see great results. There will be a demo each morning and a PowerPoint presentation. In the afternoon there will be individual help at your easel.

Susan Kuznitsky Workshop Pastel Supply List
Pastels – I suggest a minimum of 90 sticks – an assortment of both hard and soft artist-grade pastels representing a full color spectrum and value range.
Brands I use include:
Soft Pastels- Sennelier, Terry Ludwig
Medium or hard pastel brands – Rembrandt and Cretacolor.
*Prepare full size sticks by removing paper and breaking into half sticks.
Pastel Pencils – Small or medium size set
I like Carb Othello. There are many good brands.
Surfaces –
For best results I recommend: (these are what I use)
Lux Archival Sanded Paper
UArt Sanded paper 400 grit

Support (drawing board) – Gator-Board or foam core are both light weight and sturdy
Underpainting –
I will do a watercolor underpainting and an alcohol wash underpainting
• Portable easel (some venues supply easels, some don’t)
• Isopropyl Alcohol and a small, sealed container
• Optional: watercolors
• One-inch Synthetic wash brush
• A few sticks of soft vine charcoal
• Masking tape – No colored tape
• Paper towels
• Glassine or cellophane bag to protect your artwork when finished
• Towel to place under your easel (softens the blow of dropped pastels)
