Recommended Supply List

Welcoming individuals with varying levels of experience, participants are encouraged to bring:
• photos, sketches or reasonably sized objects they are most interested in learning to paint
• small lidded jar or metal container of “odorless” mineral spirits
• Optional: small jar, your choice of linseed oil or commercially prepared painting medium
• Painting rag, paper towel or shop towels to wipe brushes and clean up
• Your choice of canvas, canvas board, canvas pad. If you are new to painting, you’ll find 11” X 14” a nice size to work with.
• Your choice of palette, palette paper, box, or other clean, flat, solid surface (wood, glass, metal).
• Variety of brushes: flat, round, angle, bright, fan or palette knife. Some instructors and artists have very specific opinions about brushes; however, many of the less expensive acrylic brushes can produce very good results. My recommendation is to invest in your brushes as you gain experience and develop your own preferences. It is quite ok to start with a set of inexpensive “big box store” brushes, so long as they don’t readily fall apart and leave bristles in your paint! Usually sizes 2, 4, 6 and/or 8 will suffice.

Oil Paints: Basic recommendations are bolded below
If you are just getting started in oil paints, I recommend you invest minimally as even a simple starter kit can open the door to a very enjoyable and successful experience. And if you are more experience and have any favorites, by all means bring them!
• Soft Mixing White. Additional/optional Zinc White, Cool White or Titanium White
• Mars Black or Lamp Black. Additional/optional Payne’s Grey, Natural Grey
• Raw umber, optional VanDyke Brown or Burnt Umber
• Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium.
• Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Medium and Lemon or Hansa Yellow
• Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue.
• Sap Green.

Other Helpful Items:
• A pair of adjustable pliers to help remove stubborn paint tube caps
• An old shirt or apron to protect your clothing from any rogue paint!
• Brush cleaning soap (we’ll discuss options in our first class)
