Description

This lavishly illustrated talk shines new light on a taken-for-granted subject: the roles and meanings that textiles hold in cultures throughout the world. It will make you look at the world around you with a new
appreciation for thread and cloth (and human ingenuity), for there are few aspects of our lives—physical, social, emotional, aesthetic, spiritual—in which thread and cloth do not play a notable part. In an age when textiles are so expendable that we are willing to buy pre-torn clothing, it is hard to even imagine a time when cloth was stockpiled and the focus of international intrigue. We will look at eye-opening examples like this from across the globe and throughout history, drawing on perspectives from art, art history,
anthropology and more. Participants will enjoy stunning images and have an opportunity to share their own stories and ideas.
