Description

Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of this workshop. Janet will demonstrate various “fun” exercises geared to interpret flowers in a loose and expressive manner. Discovering the unique “nature” of individual flowers and “finding” new colors will be highlighted. Demonstrations and individual help will weave throughout the workshop, with an emphasis on letting the medium of watercolor lead the students to new adventures in watercolor. (PLEIN AIR – in studio!) Some goals include “keeping the white paper”, avoiding “mud”,
intuitive color and composition. Besides working with students individually and class demos, Janet and attendees will enjoy “Show and Tell” – and opportunity to see class work together and enjoy! We will also explore an approach to landscape. – Students can bring some of their favorites – I will also supply a photo and drawing of a demo I will do that some can trace if they wish. ALL LEVELS.

“EXPRESSIVE WATERCOLORS – WITH FLOWERS to LANDSCAPE”

Dear Artists: I look forward to our workshop. Below is a SUGGESTED list of supplies. Hopefully you already have supplies that are the same or comparable. Please call me for any questions – (386-451-8441) E-Mail: [email protected]: Website: www.watercolorsbyrogers.com

WATERCOLOR PAPERS: I suggest 140lb Cold Pressed such as Arches(I use the “wrong” side), OR Fabriano, or Kilimanjaro. I also use 140lb Rough Arches. It will be helpful to have extra watercolor paper (could be backs of old paintings, etc.) for painting exercises. Of course, you will also need a board to support your painting (you can use a gatorboard or foam core). (I PAINT WITH A SLANT AND YOU WILL NEED A BOARD) We do many paintings, so please bring enough watercolor paper (approx. 2 to 3 ptgs per day plus exercises – can be ½ sheets – or ¼ sheets ).
PENCILS: I suggest a #2B pencil for drawing on the watercolor paper. A kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener will be handy. You may want to do some drawing on sketch paper and use a softer pencil (such as an Ebony.PALETTE: I use various palettes, such as “Cheap Joe’s . – I also use a Jasper tray(plastic tray) to make more “pigment puddles”. Palettes should have individual wells plus a substantial area for mixing. (You could just bring any plastic white trays or large plates and just squeese paint onto the trays to make colors.) (you can usually get these at a “Dollar Store”)

OTHER STUFF: I will supply fresh flowers, but you can bring some of your favs or photos if you wish. Hair dryer(if you like), container for water , and paper towels (I love Bounty. I will also bring some photos of landscape elements or you can bring your favorites.
BRUSHES: I have currently replaced the Loew-Cornell brushes I used to use with the series by KingArt – they are a golden taklon material. I like them for their “spring”. I like the following: A ¾” Flat brush such as KingArt Series 9550 Wash, a “one Stroke” such as the ¾” or 1” KingArt Series 9100; a “Round” such as KingArt Series 9700 size 26 and KingArt Series 9000 size 14 or 12; “Max Round, Series 9020, size 14 or 12; (similar to the old Loew-Cornell “Ultra Round”; a small flat ½” (KingArt Series 9550 Wash) for making “puddles” ALSO LIKE AMERICAN JOURNEY (GREEN HANDLES) INTERLOCKED NYLON ROUNDS 12, 14, & 28. All these at Cheap Joes Art Stuff. (1-800-227-2788) or www.cheapjoes.com
HINT – if you need supplies from Cheap Joes quickly – ask for a “RUSH” – current cost is $6.95 and you will get them quickly if you order from them, instead of waiting for a longer period. You can always ask .

WATERCOLOR PAINTS:
LIMITED LIST OF PIGMENTS
(you can get by on these )
These colors are all mostly transparent and do well in mixing other colors.
This list is to help students who do not have access to all the colors I use –
PLEASE NOTE: there are six colors in bold…..these are the strongest recommended!! (two limited triads)

TRIAD #1 – Light to Mid Values
Aureolin (a transparent cool yellow) (Winsor-Newton) (my favorite is Winsor-Newton) (or a TRANSPARENT Cool Yellow)
Permanent Rose (a cool pink – I use a lot – Am. Journey, or W/N)
Cobalt Blue (American Journey, or W/N or Holbein)

AND

TRIAD #2 – Mid to Dark Values

Permanent Alizarin Crimson (a deep cool pink/red) – Holbein or W/N or D.Smith
Ultramarine Blue (AJ, W/N or Holbein) – probably all same
