Description

In this workshop, two portraits in pastel will be painted, with a different live model and technique for each day, and the use of photography as well.
The first day is a classical tonal portrait technique on tinted Canson Mi-Taints paper: starting with the drawing, bringing out the deep dark and light structures, and then nourishing this with luminous skin colors. This is a basic technique that can be used for all mediums and subjects.

The second day, with a simplified portrait drawing on Clairfontaine’s Pastelmat, the value block and more impressionistic colors are diluted with alcohol to sink into, and become part of, the substrate. When dry, pastels are then lushly applied over this for the final painting, leaving parts of the underpainting visible or not. It’s great fun! This can also be a technique for all subjects.
With a structured approach and clear sequences, painting a portrait is mostly about the light, and how this sculpts the subject. The three essential painting contrasts: Values, Complementary colors and Edges will be explored.
A demonstration is given at the beginning of each sequence of the portrait, to be as clear as possible with each successive stage.
