#501 Quick Draw

Since drawing the figure from life can be intimidating, this season the classes focuses on the human figure. It will help students in the overall approach in setting up, pacing your drawing (which are always timed) as well as building structure and value. We will work from photos handed out by the instructor & use mostly charcoal on larger pads (to loosen you up).

#502 Quick Pastel, Landscape for Beginers’
Instructor: Joanna Coke

If you are new to pastels then this class is for you. You will learn how to: safely set-up your working space, move pastels around with different tools & learn how easy it is to correct. Bring in your photo references of simple landscapes to draw from. The instructor has half stick pastel sets available for purchase (24-set $9 or 48-set $18), please advise at registration if you wish to purchase a set so that you’ll be ready for first class. #503 Portrait 3/4 View in Pastels, 3 day Mini-Session
Instructor: Joanna Coke

You will learn how to create a ¾ view portrait by understanding the proportions of the face when using the basic structure combined with individual features. You will use your photo references of the special person you wish to draw. You will start by layering your pastels building up shapes and values and then continuing on with details. In three days you will be able to bring the portrait to completion.

#504 Powder Graphite, 2 Day Mini-Session
Instructor: Joanna Coke

Powder Graphite looks like black powder… but ooohhh what beautiful tonal drawings can be made with it. Add a little regular graphite pencil and charcoal and you’ll have a fully developed value drawing. The 1st day of the mini-session, students will follow the instructor, step-by-step on how to use & layer these materials in a sample drawing. In the 2nd day, students will create their own drawing using the same techniques. Check supplies list closely. Open to all levels. A $3 supply fee is paid directly to the instructor.

#505 Basic Drawing Concepts

Learn basic drawing concepts such as value, composition, proportion, and shading highlights and shadows, using simple tools: soft pencils and drawing paper. Rendering three-dimensional objects on a two dimensional surface will be covered. These basic skills will help when moving into painting in any medium.

#506 The Sketchbook as an Art Form

Begin the wonderful habit of sketching and drawing everyday. Explore the materials that make sketching interesting, the locations that are inspiring and other artists that are encouraging. This is a great way to share ideas, develop new techniques and be a artist recording your daily life in your sketchbook. We will look at the history of sketching to see what we can learn. Learn new and exciting ways to paint and draw the nude figure that are easy, flexible, and fun. This course presents exciting ways to paint and draw the figure based on practical techniques from Bill's popular book, "Expressive Figure Drawing". In Bill's enjoyable mixed-media approach, the emphasis is on using interesting materials and accessible techniques to achieve a highly artistic and pleasing result. Figure drawing is more fun and less difficult with the right tools. Model fee will be split between class members.

We will draw with pencil, ink, and charcoal, conte’, pen and ink, and scratchboard. Learn to use various mediums (glass, wood, cloth, fur, baskets etc.) to show textures. You will learn to render very accurate drawings. Unusual subjects will be supplied. Learn to draw anything!

People or animals! Your choice! The beautiful softness of pastel is perfect for drawing animals. The vivid, rich shades pastels provide makes for beautiful portraits. We will not work on white paper. Toned papers create a natural background and natural base for skin tones and fur. There will be a lot of demos in this class.

For intermediate to advanced students only. This class will use Old Master drawings in lieu of a live model, copying style and methods. Subjects will include portrait, figure, drapery, and still life spanning the major periods and movements. Media will include graphite, charcoal, Conte, ink and pastel. Study will stress craftsmanship, proportion, form modeling, light and shadow effects, optical color mixing, and other technical issues.

#516 Pastel 101 Mini-Session
Instructor: Ruth Hook Colby

In this class you will receive individual attention while learning the basic fundamentals of working with pastels. This will give you a great foundation of skills, so that you can further explore in this medium. We will discuss pastels, the types and the versatility of their uses, fixatives, barrier creams, and the characteristics of different papers. Basic materials (Wallis sanded paper, soft pastels, & backing board) will be provided to each student. All supplies are included in the price of this class. The instructor will supply all materials needed.

#517 Pastel in the Studio
Instructor: Ruth Hook Colby

Pastel is an exciting, versatile medium that is truly hands on. We will work with soft pastel on sanded paper using different techniques such as layering, blending and scumbling. The rich vibrant colors are mixed on the paper, not on a palette. Individuality is encouraged by using personal photos and references. Framing tips will also be discussed. “Going Green” with pastels explains how to recycle and reuse Wallis paper, also how to create new pastels from used pieces. This is an easy technique with great results. Ruth provides a lot of personal attention while sharing her enthusiasm and love for pastel.

#518 Finding Perspective Mini-Session

Did you know that artists invented linear perspective in the 1500’s that helped begin the Renaissance period in art history? Is it time to add this to your artwork too? This mini-session is designed to help one develop the technique of perspective drawing, better enabling an artist to show objects in three dimensions. In this class you will learn from the historical examples of perspective development, how one and two point perspective drawing techniques are used, and from there learning to apply them. Just as the Renaissance artist brought new life to art, your artwork will be transformed to a greater level too, by adding new dimensions.

#521 Basics of Figure Drawing FUNdamentals Mini-Session

A mini-session designed to give a roadmap of the human figure with all the FUNdamental basics to the student; showing them how to approach, and then give their figure drawings proper proportions from head to toe, not to mention a sound leg to stand on. Skeletal structures and muscle forms will be noted to better understand the causeand effect of surface changes on the human form too and how light affects them. Students will work from live models, photographic reference and “Masters” works. No pun intended... our time will be filled with the full figure indeed.
